Down Divas is a peer-to-peer support hotline. It was created out of a clear and urgent need to give assistance to trans people dealing with realities of discrimination, marginalization, and mental health struggles. The founder, Lucy Hart (she/her) is a veteran Trans Femme Domme, actress, director, and writer. I recently had a chance to sit down with this Brooklyn-based badass to talk about the stakes of this new venture. When asked what this meant to her this is what she said…
“When I needed help, I tried calling the existing hotlines for trans people. They all pointed me to male psych wards where I'd be detransitioned. I could see why the suicide rate for trans women was -- is through the roof. So I started Down Divas. We’ve helped some people already, but we really need more volunteers and a little funding to make a big difference. My government is trying to erase my gender. It would be more convenient for them if we die. It’s time to be uneraseable and inconvenient.”

The focus on trans women stems from a harsh truth: trans women who seek aid in mainstream mental health systems — especially when suicidal — face heightened risks. For example, in many cases, they are at risk of being placed in psychiatric wards alongside cisgender men, which can put trans woman at a severe risk of being victims of transphobic violence, particularly sexual violence. This danger is part of what has driven the hotline to intentionally remain underground. It offers a space where trans women can speak honestly about their mental health without fear of being subjected to further harm by institutional systems.
Though the branding centers trans women, Down Divas welcomes calls from trans men and nonbinary people as well. The volunteers behind Down Divas are individuals who offer empathy and understanding based on lived experience. Many have faced mental health challenges, discrimination, and the erosion of basic rights and resources. What they provide is nonjudgmental peer support, a safe space to be heard. Importantly, they also make a firm commitment that no matter what is shared during a call, they will never contact authorities.
How can you help? DONATIONS and VOLUNTEERS! If you’re a trans ally now is the time to show up. This hotline is actively saving lives and can’t stay a float without a little bit of coin and care. If you’re a sex worker and have a few free hours a week or month, consider giving them to this cause. Go to their website to learn more and follow Lucy Hart on instagram to get updates about upcoming fundraisers. I’ll be performing at the next one.
